Should I Use Water Or Oil Based Stain

Here I’ll share valuable information to help you make a decision on your next project. First off, there is no “perfect” wood stain. The project you have will determine the the best wood stain and seal you need. Here, I’ll list all the advantages and disadvantages to using both types of stain.

Water Based Stains

There are many products out there to choose from, each one being unique in different ways. The main thing in common with each product (besides being water based) is they are film forming. The stain/seal can vary between semi-transparent to solid like paint. This makes them a very durable product that can last a really long time. When applied correctly, the stain also creates a seal the doesn’t let anything in or out. Most of these stains also have an acrylic or latex base.

Pros: Durable, easy clean up, unlimited color options, covers up old decking

Cons: Fails on surfaces walked on very quickly, chips & peels, locks moisture into wood

Oil Based Stains

Similar to water based products, some oil stains also have film forming properties. This is from a wax like substance in the oil that hardens when dried, giving a shiny finish. Other oil stains are non-film forming and strictly penetrates the wood leaving a flat finish. Oil staines are meant to condition the wood while sealing it from water. The idea is similar to sap in a tree, the sap prevents rotting and moisture from entering the tree. Oil staines and seals are meant to preserve exterior wood, it wont be the longest lasting product but it extends the life of your wood.

Pros: Preserves wood, easy maintenance, no chipping or peeling (non-film forming), oil penetrates wood, water seal, highlights grain in new wood

Cons: Fails sooner on wood surface, harder to clean up, solvent smell

Conclusion

Both products can be great when used in their strengths. Non-film forming oil stains work well on all exterior wood wood. The oil helps the wood last a very long time, but does require more frequent maintenance. Water based stains work well on vertical surfaces. Its tough film does well against all types of weather but does very poorly on any surface that gets walked on. Buying wood stain from the big box stores is not recommended, no matter how good the marketing and label looks. Call a local paint store, or read some more information on this site on specific wood stains.
